The History of Downclose
Downclose Stables was originally known as Downclose Stud.
The house and first stable block were constructed by Mr Andrew Henry Warren in 1972 when he made the decision to relocate his ever growing passion for race horse breeding.
Formerly known as the Windwhistle Stud the horses were moved from the Trusts home at Coombe Farm to Downclose Lane in North Perrott, and Downclose Stud was formed.
Downclose Stud was hugely successful under the management of Michael & Anna Falkiner; both of whom still live in the village of North Perrott to this day. After Mr Warren’s death (during 1982) Miss Sheila Nancy Ralphs took actions and formed the A H Warren Trust Group, carrying out the wishes of Mr Warren’s legacy as per his will.
Nancy, as she was known to all that knew her, shared Mr Warren’s passion for breeding horses and during 2002 Downclose Stud was the leading TBA breeders on the flat.
The Stud continued for many years under Nancy’s and Michael’s management, until Michael’s retirement.
After Nancy’s death during 2017, the Directors of the A H Warren Trust were keen to keep the historic equine link going at Downclose with desires to reinvigorate the site to best honour the memory of Mr AH Warren and also the Trust’s founder, Nancy.
So we warmly welcome you to the Downclose Stables website with the hope you enjoy browsing and find what you are looking for.
